If you would like to ask about your coverage for a particular condition or service please call Cowan Insurance Group at 1-888-509-7797 or email ISHP@cowangroup.ca. They may ask you questions about your medical need in order to help determine your eligibility.

To find a local doctor, hospital or lab, click here to use the Provider Search Tool.

Before your appointment or before going to the doctor, please call their office to confirm if they offer direct-billing.

Please ensure you have your health plan card with you when visiting the doctor or hospital.

If you go to a doctor that is out of province or not listed on the Provider Search Tool, you may have to pay for the services you receive and submit a claim.

If you have paid up front for a medical service, making a claim means you can submit your receipts or bills to the insurance company for review for payment back to you.

Making a claim requires you to have a claim form, receipts, bills and any medical notes you may have to avoid any delays with your claim processing.

Your International Student Medical & Wellness Plan is here to cover your expenses if you have a sudden illness, injury or medical care need.

Many students use their coverage for things like cold and flu, ear infections, cuts that need stitches, broken or fractured bones, headaches, and mental health care such as talking to a counsellor about your thoughts and feelings.

Your plan does not cover everything though and it is important to review your coverage and especially before you seek any expensive health care services. Always reach out to StudentVIP at info@studentvip.ca if you have questions about your coverage.
If you visit a medical provider that does not offer direct-billing, you will be required to pay for your service and submit a claim for reimbursement, if your claim is eligible for coverage.

If you do not have your health plan card with you at the time of your appointment, you may have to pay up front and submit a claim.

If you go to your appointment and the person at the desk does not recognize your card, you can ask to speak to someone else or someone in billing as the front desk staff may not all be aware of the plan card.

It is always best to call before going to that medical provider to ask if they will accept your insurance.
