The Spring Opt-Out Period will be available from April 15th 2024 –May 25th, 2024. This is only valid for students beginning their studies in the Spring 2024 Term.
If you have comparable alternative coverage (usually through a parent, spouse, or work) you can apply to opt-out of the extended health and/or dental plan during the term in which you begin your studies for that academic year. (i.e. Students beginning in September can apply to opt-out during the fall opt-out period only).
You will be asked to provide proof of this coverage when you submit the opt-out application which includes:
-
Name of the primary insured person (i.e. parent or spouse/common-law partner)
-
Name of the other insurer
-
Policy/Certificate number
-
Insured Person’s name and relationship to you
You will also be asked to upload a photo of your proof of coverage. This can be a plan card or a letter from your insurance company that confirms you are covered on the plan, and includes the policy/certificate/ID number(s).
Students wishing to opt-out with alternative coverage must submit an opt-out application each academic year.
You should be aware that your SMUSA Health & Dental benefits offers benefits specifically designed for students. You may find it advantageous to remain enrolled under these benefits and coordinate your benefits with your existing coverage.
Note: There are no exceptions or extensions to the opt-out deadline. Opt-outs are only granted if the plan is unused. Opt-outs do not carry over to the following policy year and must be completed each academic/policy year.
